Stem Cells Part 1: Ending Your Knee Pain

Did you know that osteoarthritis is one of the most expensive conditions to treat when joint replacement surgery is required? O.A. was the second most costly health condition treated at U.S. hospitals in 2013. In that year, it accounted for $16.5 billion, or 4.3%, of the combined costs for all hospitalizations.

In 2012, patients in 75 countries had undergone adult stem cell transplants. Multiple studies show the benefits of a particular stem cell, mesenchymal stem cells (MSC’s). These stem cells are extracted from bone marrow, fat, and, recently, umbilical cords.

One of the most favorable conditions that MSC’s have been shown to treat is knee osteoarthritis. There is also little to no risk with mesenchymal stem cell injections compared with knee surgery, with no fatalities reported after receiving injections.

Stem cells aim to slow and repair damaged cartilage, decrease inflammation, reduce pain and possibly delay the need for knee replacement surgery. Are stem cells the next stage of healthcare that will catapult us into a new world of healthcare?

Scientists are starting to experiment with stem cells to regrow heart tissue, which was thought to be impossible over 20 years ago. Can stem cells give us the power to treat a large number of conditions with great success? If so, there will need to be a massive overhaul in who can use them and regulate them. Nevertheless, will other providers be willing to substitute health interventions with stem cells?

For example, one stem injection for knee osteoarthritis is a fraction of a total knee replacement cost. There is also little to no risk with mesenchymal stem cell injections compared with knee surgery, with no fatalities reported after receiving injections. Researchers in the U.K. reported in The Bone & Joint Journal that 1 in 200 patients die within 90 days after a total knee replacement.

With stem cells successfully helping many patients with their knee pain, we can confidently say that they are a great option when looking for alternatives to surgery or medication.
