About 36 million older adults fall each year—resulting in more than 32,000 deaths. Each year, about 3 million older adults are treated in emergency departments for a fall injury. One out of every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury.

Joint pain is at the source of many falls. When a person is compensating for pain, their “gait” (the way they walk) patterns will change including how they swing their arms, in cases of shoulder or arm discomfort and their stride length and stride width. When pain drives a person to “compensate” their reaction times change and this can result in a poorly conditioned response to react to anything that can throw their “balance” off.

Research has linked joint pain to an increased risk for falls. The more joints arthritis affects, the greater the odds you’ll take a tumble. In a 2015 Arthritis Care & Research study, people with pain in one lower joint – their knee or hip – were 53 percent more likely to fall.
